TikTok Provides The Community Control to Limit Artificial Intelligence-Made Videos in Their Feeds

TikTok is introducing a new feature that allows them to lessen the quantity of artificial intelligence-produced videos appearing in their timelines. This step comes as the company disclosed that it now features in excess of 1 billion content made with AI.

Trial and Implementation

The update is in a pilot phase over the following weeks before a global launch. This advancement aligns with a rise in AI-generated material, driven by emerging content generation software.

The Broader AI Trend

It has been noted that nearly 10% of the quickest rising channels on a competing service only show AI-generated videos. A significant portion of this output is classified as “AI slop”, a label for poor-quality, bulk-generated content that is often absurd or dreamlike.

“We know from our community that many people enjoy content made with AI tools, including computer-generated images to informative clips, and we want to offer the community the power to see more or less of that, based on their own preferences,” commented a company executive.

Volume and Proportions

TikTok disclosed that there are now over a billion videos on its app tagged as AI-generated. Overall, more than 100 m pieces of content are submitted to the service each day, making clips made by AI a relatively small part of its overall inventory.

Customizing Your Feed

Viewers will be able to reduce or increase the volume of artificial media they see by opening the content preference setting in the app and choosing AI-made media. Additional categories that can already be modified under the filter cover current affairs, style, beauty, and movement.

Platform Guidelines

The platform’s guidelines require creators to tag “realistic” artificially created content, and it forbids dangerous deepfakes of celebrities or critical incidents. Any authentic-looking AI video that is without a tag can be removed under its community policies.

Additionally, the platform will now apply an artificially created watermark to content created with its own AI tools, or detected by an collaborative effort for recognizing content made by AI. This measure is intended to deter users from attempting to circumvent the disclosure requirement.

Responsible AI Funding

The company is also launching a two million dollar educational fund for specialists and organizations to develop learning resources about using AI responsibly. This project will support charitable organizations focused on teaching programming and robotics.

Platform Protection

TikTok has justified its moderation strategy, following discussion over intentions to lay off numerous review team members in the United Kingdom. The company is planning to cut hundreds of positions in its content moderation department in the UK capital, with worker representatives and digital protection specialists expressing worry that people are being substituted by machine-led review.

A senior executive clarified that human moderation would remain essential, but automated tools can safeguard staff by eliminating the most distressing content ahead of it is viewed by humans. TikTok stated a notable drop in disturbing and violent content reviewed by human moderators over the last 12 months due to the use of its automated systems.

It is vital to combine humans and technology to ensure user safety,” she said. “We’ll have humans as involved in the system, but we further consider it’s highly necessary to limit contact with dangerous material as rapidly, which is where a lot of the machine support is making a difference work at speed.”
