Trumpism's most telling and distinctive occasions – not its most crucial, nor cruelest, nor most hazardous, nor most foolish, but potentially its most enlightening – emerged earlier this harvest season. During the period of a few weeks, the American president commenced revealing all observers his designs for an ornate dance hall two times larger compared to the White House and then began solo dismantling the eastern section to construct it.
He has performed deeds 10,000 times as bad – the existing assessment of casualties due to his slashing to international aid stands at 600,000 and increasing, and this week a study forecast his petroleum strategies would result in fatalities 1.3 million more. Yet nothing as characteristic. No former leader would have risked – genuinely, no other president would have conceived – unilaterally destroying significant portions of the executive mansion to construct a palace-inspired entertainment space, with the active collaboration of some of America's wealthiest, the majority of whom maintain dealings with the government.

As confusing as it is to watch the president try to upend the traditional concept regarding democracy and exchange it with its complete opposite, there remains a substantial portion of Americans who wouldn't consider it totally unfamiliar. That is those of us – within elder demographics close to half – who were brought up within mainstream Protestant traditions.
We have observed across decades as rightwing evangelical churches converted the Savior we were raised with into the complete reverse of who we understood him to be. At its most basic, they transformed an image of affection into a figure of animosity who blesses specifically the brutality that he denounced in the Gospel; this has happened more gradually, across decades rather than months, but it is nonetheless disturbing in the same ways, a bewildering emotional blow for numerous individuals.
A Harmful Christianity Takes Hold
So let me first describe the Christ that I grew up with, since in theory Jesus is the center of Christian religion, and since the rapidly expanding group among Americans could have minimal awareness regarding him since they are skeptics or doubters or nones. I take no issue with any of these traditions, nor with alternative spiritual paths; but I do think that there are pearls of significant worth within Christian narrative.
It is unquestionably not the narrative of an authoritative monarch emerging; conversely, a baby is born to displaced parents in an automotive shelter, who must quickly flee to a different country to escape covert authorities. The baby grows up in simple surroundings, a working carpenter; his message is about love for fellow humans, particularly for the poor – not merely emotional affection, but practical compassion, demonstrated through nourishing and sheltering. Christ's response to hostility is to turn the opposite cheek – not as an act of passive acceptance, but as a way to teach the aggressor; his method regarding offenses is that if an individual takes your jacket you ought to provide the person your additional clothing too.
The obvious and direct truth that the Savior from scripture advocates for a form of radical love concentrated on the poor is what has always made Christian religion somewhat of a scandalous religion: appealing to the populace, but owing to its natural unconventionality needing to be controlled. During the 1950s it was restrained by dilution – Protestantism was so widespread that it practically baptized the status quo.
A Struggle for the Finest Within Us
So I have been heartened to witness the persistent defiance to Trump develop over the last twelve months. It has served as significant comfort to assist in constructing the campaign that has protested openly in rally after rally, and appears to have motivated voters to participate in numbers in the off-year elections. We will need to continue it, and through comparable resolve, displaying national flags throughout each rally and appeals to the highest qualities of American history.

The country is optimally secured, essentially, by relationship to the best within national tradition, just as Christianity is most protected by relationship to that which renders it distinctive and wonderful, specifically the model of Christ. In both situations does it mean acting as if the most negative regarding America and Christianity never occurred; it means both humility and faith, a mixture that committed US believers should be comfortable with.
