The Iconic Puzzle Game Wouldn't Succeed at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type Could Fix That

Whenever a significant honors show nears, there’s always an outcry for introducing additional classifications to recognize unsung work and delight the hearts of fans who have specialized interests.

My colleague previously argued for a horror game category. It would be amazing. The same goes for board games, which is someone's personal cause. However, I must insist for pushing forward since similar to blinkered fanatics, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request is the most urgent and significant. Here's the proposal: There should be an award type for logic-based games.

Categorizing Game Types

Organizing artistic expressions defies precise measurement; it remains highly personal, and typically start arguments resulting in unclear classifications. It's understandable that movie academies steer clear of genre categories. But it is an essential concession in the world of video games, showing incredible range they barely qualify one unified medium.

For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to be recognized, while allowing diverse titles to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.

Existing Game Classification System

The major gaming awards offer these genre categories for Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these award types actually cover many game types, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.

Not so for puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Consider three of this year’s best games, all very different: structural challenges of one title, intense tile-matching from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles of a third title. What category would fit them between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Recognition Challenges

Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games released every year that have no home in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit for categories like Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging independent game categories.

  • One classic puzzle game received no recognition completely in 2014
  • Another imaginative release received no nominations in 2019
  • Popular arranging title was overlooked that year
  • Only a few logic titles managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories

Value of Brain-Teasers

Commonly they're modest productions, however the design behind logic titles is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles rank among the most-played games globally maintaining this status for an extended period.

The famous puzzle experience challenges popular creative games claiming status as highest-selling title ever; it additionally competes for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational for gaming as medium, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.

Proposal and Rationale

Logic titles wouldn't face that issue. One could readily select multiple candidates engaging, different, qualified experiences annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.

And to reiterate, these represent titles that otherwise have no home during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators operate at the challenging frontier of video game design, producing among most fundamental forms within interactive entertainment. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they merit acknowledgment. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
